Hunter riders Trenton Day and Cameron Ivory have been selected for the Australian Junior Men Cross Country (XCO) team to compete at the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships.
The championships - from August 31 to September 5 this year - are being held in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada, and will commemorate twenty years of international mountain biking.
Trenton and Cameron are no strangers to the Australian team, with both 18-year-olds selected in 2009 for the World Championships, held at Mt Stromlo in Canberra. Cameron placed 36th in the Junior Men division, but by a cruel twist of fate, Trenton was unable to compete in last year’s championships, suffering a broken wrist and multiple fractures in a collision with a car during training in Newcastle.
The selection of Cameron came as no surprise this year, as he turned in some excellent results both at home and abroad. Following his injury in 2009, Trenton missed the first two national series rounds and national championships for 2010, but an excellent result in the Oceania championships confirmed his selection.
Both riders are currently sponsored by the Australian Swell–Redshift Mountain Bike Team, which supports Australian mountain bike riders in competition both domestically and overseas. They are also individually supported by Breakaway Cycles Morisset, Drift Bikes, Newcastle, and the Waki Merida Bunch Cycling Team.
Cameron, an HSC student from Rankin Park, has only been racing mountain bikes for four years, and first joined HMBA in 2006. This will be Cameron’s last year racing as a junior before moving to the Under 23 age category.
Cameron is excited about his prospects in Canada next month.
“It’s been really hard juggling work, riding, and school. Even my trial HSC exams have had to be brought forward to work around the trip,” said Cameron.
“I’m not putting any pressure on myself for a specific goal. I’m just going to ride my own style and try to improve on last year’s world championships”.
Trenton, who has been racing with HMBA since 2005, is also currently in Year 12. Trenton started his two wheeled obsession riding motocross as a junior, however after a serious accident his father steered him in the direction of mountain bikes and he has never looked back.
Trenton is looking forward to trying his hand against the best in the world this year after missing out in 2009.
“A dream result would be a top 15 result at the world championships next month,” he said.
“I’ve been training really well and I’m really confident that I will improve on last year’s world cup results”.
Cameron and Trenton also travelled to Europe with the national team last year, and raced two World Cup rounds against the best in the world. Trenton placed 35th and Cameron 57th in Germany, whilst in Belgium they placed 31st and 42nd respectively. As neither of the boys were seeded for the races - and therefore started at the rear of 100 riders - both results were excellent.
Both riders fly out for Canada on the 10th of August with the national team. In the lead up to the world championships they will compete in the Canada Cup race in Vermont, and the Quebec Cup in Quebec. Following these warm up races, it will be on to Mont-Sainte-Anne for their final preparations.
HMBA wishes both of our riders and the entire Australian team all the very best in their endeavours at the world championships.
